Who should apply for 485 Visa?
if you are under 50 years of age and have held a Student visa in the last 6 months, and meet the Australian study requirements, you could apply for the Temporary Graduate 485 Visa. You can include family members in the 485 visa application or they can apply to join you in Australia as a subsequent entrant.
There are 3 streams,
- Graduate Stream
- Post-Study Work stream
- Additional requirement: Must have an eligible degree which is not a standalone diploma or trade qualification.
- Second Post-Study Work stream
- Additional requirement: Must have lived only in a designated regional area for at least 2 years immediately before applying AND must not have held a previous 485 visa in the graduate stream or as the primary applicant.
Australian Study
Before you apply for the 485 visa, you must have met the Australian Study requirement,
- a single eligible qualification that requires at least 2 academic years (92 weeks) study, or
- more than 1 qualification that results in a total of at least 2 academic years study resulting in an eligible qualification.
The study must be completed in a total of no less than 16 calendar months AND must be a CRICOS registered course resulting in the award of an eligible degree, diploma or trade qualification.
English Skills
You must have achieved at least IELTS (Academic or General Training) overall average of 6 and at least 5 in each band or equivalent.
Nominated Occupation
A nominated occupation from the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and closely related qualification must be included in your visa application in order for it to be processed by the Department of Home Affairs.
You must also provide evidence of having applied for a skills assessment for the nominated occupation.
Application
You must be in Australia for the grant of the 485 visa.
Offshore/Onshore rollover
The Temporary Graduate 485 visa cannot be extended or renewed once it expires after 18months.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the period of stay has temporarily increased to 24 months if your 485 visa was granted from 1 December 2021.
For Post-Study Work stream, you can stay up to 2 years in Australia.
Second Post-Study Work stream, you can stay up to 4 years in Australia.
Hong Kong passport holders
Current and future temporary graduate 485 visa holders from Hong Kong can hold the Temporary Graduate 485 visa for up to 5 years and will also have a pathway to permanent residency after 5 years.
